Salutations, friends!
It has been a time since I’ve had the notion of treating ChaoticanWriter.com as a place to talk about… well… itself.
The year 2026 has been a turbulent one for many of us. In some ways, chaotic and disruptive. In others, inspiring and spirited! … As it has been six months since the last update (a gap which is unheard of), I’m looking to touch base and give yall an informal Hello, and an equally informal update on what to expect.
Quick Recap of What This Place Is
To provide the hoity-toity version, Chaotican Writer is an independent website about writing, tabletop RPGs, world-building, and related geeky content. It wasn’t always that though. In truth, it began as a semi-professional looking niche blog which was supposed to function as a way to platform my fantasy fiction novel that I started a long time ago. Over time, as I put that project in the junk drawer, I maintained the site as a stand-alone place for knowledge and new ideas, despite that I just couldn’t choose between a deep topic to cover.
As time went on, I embraced it as a variety blog about the things that captured my imagination the most; fantasy worldbuilding, storytelling, Dungeons and Dragons, and more. I added lists of writers resources, TTRPG resources, random name generators, and eventually revised its email updates into its own stand-alone newsletter, Dungeon Delve, … which you can visit and SUBSCRIBE to here!!
Ultimately, this site became a place with hundred of thousands of real live-human impressions, and there was something gratifying about finding it on the top of searches, and knowing that someone out there was getting some value out of this wonky little hovel in the big internet city!
A Need for Change
However, while the site may seem straightforward to a viewer, its journey was one of layers of ramshackle construction which began to outgrow its old foundation. Despite it being a spot to find out about different government types for worldbuilding, conjure up magical kingdoms by name, speculate on different subgenres of technomagic, and showcase the progression of castle technology through history, I didn’t actually know what its fuller purpose was, or what its final form needed to be.
Despite expansions and remodels, what it ended up being was my stubborn take on pre-social-media geek news and knowledge-base sites circa beginning of the millennium. I was pursuing a magical palace atop a floating island without understanding what material it should be built with (Instead, I postulated about floating oceans). Other times, I was simply hesitant to employ the resources necessary for it to actually live in my minds eye.
From the outset, I wanted this place to become a hot spot where creative writers, hobby game industry people, dice warlocks, and game developers go to get stimulated. In some ways, it was trying to be the blog-version of a world-building geeks TED talk, or a college class led by an unofficial teacher who is learning as they are going.
What It Means to Me Personally
The journey of Chaotican Writer is also one of personal identity and mental health on my journey from age 30 to 38, and a by extension, a longer one going back to age 18.
The “Chaotican” part was an expression of combating status-quo ideas, and being unafraid to be unique. The “Writer” part embraces the wonders of creation using a medium which serves as the foundation of larger storytelling mediums. Its the domain of a curious and evolving adult wandering the world, from creative angsty teenager to confident renaissance man.
While each year saw self-improvement and discovery, I’ve spent a long time in conflict around my worth as a creative spirit. I was a person of big ideas, with a difficulty in manifesting them. My laptop was a black mirror, puzzling me over purpose. Doubts transformed into disaffections. I worried, sometimes despaired, over the strange and stressful difficulty getting articles and content out faster than once a month. I obsessed over small things; metrics, theming, visibility, content decisions,… finding solace in some, and brain-break in others.
IN OTHER WORDS, this site may be your humble shack amongst a broader sea of skyscrapers, … but each and every article hides a battle waged in its construction. This brick house has seen fire, asbestos, rodents, and a few near misses by the wrecking ball.
Facing The Present, and Finding the Future
One little anecdote I love using around people goes a little like this:
Science understands that the average age of the cells in your body is around 7 years. Some exist for just a few weeks, others are multiple decades, but the average is seven. … This means, that about every seven-or-so years, most of your cells have been replaced with new ones. In other words, given enough time, you are not just a new person in abstract,… you are LITERALLY a NEW person.
I’ve changed! I’m different. Not just mentally, but physically. For better or worse, I am a new human!
So what do I want out of 2026 and beyond? I want to bring knowledge, but also festivity. Create a space that is not just the vessel for a larger TTRPG publishing journey, but one that embraces the weirdness and uniqueness of every person. And what better way to share that but with a brand new construction project!
Enter “Odd Fair Press”
In the mist of the wildwood, a dancing of lights can be seen. A caravan emerges into the wide open meadow donned with decorative wagons of replendant colors, fairy lights, jovial entertainers, and acrobatic equipment. Firedancers flank the procession. Fiddles play atonal tunes with a electrifying flair. The moon shines, casting shadows that mimic their movement, while some take stranger shapes, and others none at all. A tantilizing sensation washes over the observers from the village nearby; something unearthly, yet inviting. Welcoming… to the Odd Fair!
Odd Fair Press. A publisher of independent games and resources. A vessel of festive ideas. A thinker in the blogosphere carrying on the conversation. The next logical evolution to the formula that began with this site, taking up a greater need for color and ideas, to take that embrace of the weird and unearthly self, and celebrate it more broadly across the community.
Preparing For a Future Without Chaotican Writer
In truth, I know that a disparate collection of students, independent creators, and game masters have Chaotican Writer confidently in their bookmarks. Perhaps it came up in someones seminar once, on a Powerpoint, someones sources for a project, or a rogue Google search. Its been around for eight years, and surely showed up somewhere to your knowledge. This all might seem like a case of sad goodbyes, and information loss.
However, nothing about this place is really going away. Much of it is moving over to Odd Fair Press in due time. Some of it I’ll rewrite and purpose for platforms more appropriate. To me, this place is a bit of a monument. Fickle, as it will come down and be replaced, but something that laid the groundwork towards something new. Different, though similar. A grand old house that fit myself and others decently well for a time, but ultimately, architecture changes, and so do proportions.
Odd Fair Press, and whatever proceeds from here on out, could not exist without Chaotican Writer. That says something about the projects we start, but have no idea where they lead. Sometimes, its best to just start! … Its something a lot of creators struggle with. If there’s anything this site stands for now, it is that its better to create and be imperfect, than not to at all!
Go Forth Boldly
After a break of eight months, I feel the need. Its an electric feeling in my bones, less like a numbing, more like a narrowing of focus. Tiger eyes peering through the brush. It is time for the waylay of these months to expire, and a wave of new insights and inspiration to begin.
You will find those at Odd Fair Press (and Dungeon Delve) going forward!
From the bottom of my heart, thank you for your continued patronage and readership. … I wouldn’t be doing any of this stuff without you!
