VIDEO: 4 Methods of Worldbuilding: Some Quick Tips

Greetings, my fellow writers, worldbuilders, TTRPG enthusiasts, and other creatives!

Over the past few months, the focus of ChaoticanWriter has been on the production of live-streaming and other video content. Part of this new wave of content has enabled a different way of engaging in topics concerning Worldbuilding through these mediums.

Today, I present to you the FIRST official debut video of the Chaotican Writer Youtube Channel; part of a series of worldbuilding and dungeon mastering tips. In this video, “4 Methods of Worldbuilding: Some Quick Tips”, I briefly sum up four separate angles I take when it comes to worldbuilding for stories or table-top campaigns, and review how those might pertain to your own process!

In summary, the four methods I describe are:

  • Large-to-Small
    • Starting with the broader scope of the world geographically, and working your way down to the smaller elements.
    • Tackling the biggest and broadest questions first before moving down toward the more minute details.
  • Small-to-Large
    • Start from a narrow and zoomed in location, focus on that origin, and build out from there.
    • Consider how smaller customs, cultures, and place go on to construct a larger body.
  • Story-Based
    • Follow the path of a written or intended story, and keep the scope of the world within the direction of that story.
    • Take advantage of the smaller scale to focus on limited scenes and locations that follow in the story’s wake.
  • Character-Based
    • Define the world within the eyes of the character(s) involved to better understand experiences in this world firsthand.
    • Sights, sounds, and sensations, are key. Personal relationships, conflicts, and POV inform the world as we see it.

The intention of providing these methods is to provide different angles for the worldbuilder, and they are encouraged to use all of these methods to help flesh out the fullness of that world they are constructing.

As for future videos in this series, the interval, scheduling, itinerary and other details are in the process of maturing. If you enjoyed the content provided, dont forget to LIKE the video, SHARE it with your friends, and stay tuned for future content!
