Today, I’m excited to ramble about a TTRPG audio Kickstarter that has blipped onto my radar; Fantasy+ by Monument Studios.
As a long-time dungeon master, I love enhancing my games with all means of production value, from miniatures to terrain, digital maps, music, sound, etc. When running Dungeons and Dragons actual plays on my Twitch channel, I’ve often gone the extra mile to set the mood of the scene, and the atmosphere of the setting the characters find themselves in by using music and sound effects.
Ask any experienced game master; the right tools and content can truly transcend the gaming experience for everyone at the table!
This is why when Monument Studios announced their new Kickstarter, Fantasy+, I had to pick up a megaphone and put it on blast. As a satisfied patron of their work for years, and an appreciator of good soundtrack music, throwing down a word for their new app was a no-brainer!
So,… my dice-rolling, adventure-running, sword-fighting, spell-casting, tabletop RPG gaming friends; … Let’s talk music and sound for your table or digital RPG campaign using Fantasy+!
Fantasy+, the Future of TTRPG Audio
Simply put, Fantasy+ is a TTRPG audio application that plays original music and sound effects designed for a cinematic play experience. Who is Monument Studios?
During my digital game mastering journey, I’ve leveraged a handful of audio resources and music from various sources. However, to this day, some of my all-time favorite mood pieces and compilations of music have come from the Fantasy Complete I, II, and III collection by Monument Studios.
Indeed! I’ve been a fan of Monument Studios compositions for years, and I have whole gaming playlists that feature their works that I’ve played while broadcasting past Dungeons and Dragons campaigns. There is something for every mood, encounter, and level of intensity.
Monument Studios is a small, family-based company that composes amazing royalty-free, Hollywood-quality tracks for TTRPG players and game masters, as well as for professional use (TV shows, film, podcasts, Youtube, Twitch, etc.)
In fact, you might notice their recent work with Fantasy Complete IV earned them a 2024 ENNIE Award nomination for Best Aid/Accessory (Digital category), which I was also pleased to discover during my first sit-in at the ENNIE Awards ceremony at GenCon 2024.
The Music of Monument Studios
As writer of this little digital rag you’re reading, my original university degree was in music performance and music business, covering subjects such as music theory, music history, aural skills, and business marketing for bands and non-profit music organizations. It was a program mostly based in classical music, but I had fun with it.
I remember sitting in music history class for a test, and looking cleverly at my classmates once the Edward Greig piece played, nodding our heads to the beat because during study the night before, we joked around and started free-styling to it like a hip-hop track. Good times! … In short, while most of the terminology has deteriorated over the past twelve years, that appreciation comes back to me every now and then when listening to good soundtrack music.
When listening to Monument Studios various audio tracks, they absolutely hearken to Hollywood-style conventions, mixed with classical and romantic era concert music. In some tracks, you’ll notice flourishes of influences from cinematic composers like Hans Zimmer and John Powell. In others, a touch of Elder Scrolls soundtrack. Some drive suspense with pulsing strings, striking timpani, thundering cinematic booms, and tense digital percussive sequences. Some are ambient murals of various brooding strings or dissonant fiddles. Others are somber solos ala cello, piano, harpsichord, and other instruments.
What’s even better is Monument Studios’ focus on music optimized for tabletop RPGs. You can tell most of the pieces are written to be supplemental to a gameplay experience; not overbearing or distracting. It’s the perfect soundtrack for a deeply engaging story with both somber moments and powerful scenes.
Picking up this massive library for just a few bucks a month is a mind-blowing opportunity that you should jump on!
